Creating a Disability Focused Group in your NASW Chapter

Currently (as of 2023), NASW does not have a national group or committee that addresses disability priorities.

This guide was created as a resource by an NASW member who started a disability focused group in their state Chapter (it is not a product of NASW), to support others in doing the same.

Cover page of the Guide for Creating a disability focused group within an NASW Chapter. Shows the DWSW logo, a multicolored arrow pointing right inside a circle. Light purple and white background with 3 people at a desk with blank speech bubbles above them.

The process for starting a group within any membership organization's Chapter usually follows a fairly similar path, however Chapters may have individual processes for starting a new Chapter affiliated group - often referred to as Interest Groups or Councils.

Generally, the process begins with

  • gathering interested members and

  • submitting a request to the Chapter leadership to start the group.

Be sure to check with your chapter website or leadership for specific instructions on Chapter affiliated groups.

This guide provides a

  • Group Startup Checklist

  • Sample Proposal to Chapter Leadership

  • Sample Group Structure (Purpose, Guidelines & Goals) and

  • Additional Resources
